Challenge
I had read recently through TEDtalks' site about a fellow who wanted to talk about Happiness.
Happiness at work?
In this video, should you opt out of watching it, the Speaker Shawn Achor, challenges the listeners to try being happier.
The plan was a two part one, and part one was to list 3 things every day for 21 days that make you happy. Sounds simple enough, right?
I went onto FaceBook and proceeded to do exactly this... here are my 21 days' worth of results.
Side note - It wasn't as easy as it might seem.
Ryans 21 Days of "Thinking Happy Thoughts"
Day 1 - Three Things Im thankful for in y life -
1) University - didn't realize how much I missed learning things I actually care about
2) Tae Kwon Do - always enjoy it, and glad to make it part of my routines
3) Jets - I know it's lame but I'm happy they're back all the same.
These three things have helped start the year off right. They make me happy.
Day 2 -
1) my friends. I'm pretty lucky here. My friends ... Well I can write a novel on my friends. Coles notes; I'm a lucky guy
2) my family. Some of my family drives me nuts but that's nothing new, I'm still glad I have the people I do have.
3) my vision. Yeah, I'm blind in one eye and the other sucks too but at least I can still function. My eye doc calls me a mutant hahaha
Yeah, im happy with these things.
Day 3 - Ryan's three things, day 3
1)my health. It's not great but whenever I feel whiny I just think of how much worse it could actually be
2) music. I love it and its a part of my everyday.
3)Canada. I'm lucky and blessed to live here. Anyone who disagrees with Canada's awesomeness can leave.
Day 4 - 1)toughness. I'm a tough little bastard, inside and out. It's helped, alot.
2)smarts. I enjoy being somewhat smart and look for it in others.
3)the gift of communication. It's a lifesaver in almost any situations.
Day 5 - 1) I love nature. Notably the Lake. Weak hawk lake specifically. It's my place of peace
2) Winnipeg. I love you, I hate you... I am INNNNNNN YOU!
3) quiet. Nothing more relaxing than a bit of quiet time where and whenever you can get it
Day 6 -1)laughter. I love making people laugh. Always have. i enjoy a good chuckle as well.
2)excitement. It's like waiting for Christmas when you're a little kid.
3)sleep. Love it. Do it all the time. Just finished a bunch of it. Will do it again this evening!
Day 7 - 1)my guitar. Stress relief, anger management, loyal friend, speaker to my soul
2)personality. Every story is unique and makes us who we are. Embrace it and love yourselves. Life is hard enough.
3)I like me in general. I'm a strange and goofy dude with a terrible potty mouth, but people seem to like me anyway. I guess because I liked me first.
Day 8 - 1)funny. It trumps everything and feels good. Just don't let it be at someone's expense
2)well placed insults/jokes. Hilarity always ensues
3)a good comedy. Anchorman will always make me laugh and when you need it most, it delivers.
Day 9 - 1)a good book. There are a few that I've literally read to tatters and have a big impact on who I am today
2)a good song or poem. If it speaks to you, it speaks.
3)a good day. They aren't everyday but when they sneak up on you, it ends up being a pleasant surprise
Day 10 - 1)hockey. The Jets are back and I'm as big a fan as anyone. Excitement for every game is always there. Fun times!
2)springtime. Best time of year. Growth and greenery and warmth
3)perfect execution. That moment when you know the balls going in the net, the throw is on target, the puck hits the tape, or you launch that excellent kick. Just exhilarating.
Day 11 - (Sadly, because Facebooks new formatting sucks so badly, 4 of my days on Facebook have disappeared. If I can retrieve these days Ill edit the post.)
Day 12 -
Day 13 -
Day 14 -1)camping. I love roughing it out in the back country. Near Mantario Trail is best
2)hiking. Something earthy and primal about hiking through forests. And peaceful.
3)campfires. Smell great, keep you warm and cook your food.
Campfire=good woman?
I ran a theme for today.
Day 15 - 1)waking up every day with a song in my head
2)the sounds of birds when you wake up, especially out in the country.
3)fresh air. Best sleeps are always camping or at cabins.
Day 16 - 1)earl grey tea. For the memories
2)good memories and all that they bring
3)Dungeons & Dragons baby!
Yeah, that.
Day 17 - 1)grace
2)humility
3)forgiveness
I've dealt with all three if these things recently and variously in my history. They are hard but good things. I'm happy that I'm still learning these lessons
Day 18 - 1)that scary/exciting gut feeling when your plane first defies gravity.
2)nice smelling long hair. It's a weakness
3)the quiet during and after a fresh snowfall
Day 19 - After an exceptionally difficult week last week, I'm back to finish what I started.
My three things, day 19
1)making people laugh. A simple yet powerful joy
2)when people enjoy my writings enough to tell me so. It's vain but I can't help it.
3)underdogs. Who doesn't love them?
Day 20 - It's harder to do this when things are difficult.
My three things, day 20
1)the day that you know Spring has finally arrived
2)the excitement and butterflies of love
3)the smell of grass after the rain.
Day 21 -
-the final in my series-
1)stretching and lounging in bed after a good nights sleep
2)the knowledge that you are loved and supported by the faithful few, no matter how stupid you can get
3)life. I love this life. It's a gift, no matter how miserable it can seem at times, things get better and the good outweighs the bad
