GAS!!! GAS!!! GAS!!!
Back in the day when I was in the Infantry, we did this drill. NBC Warfare was what it was all about... and as awesome and awful as it was, I see that it was necessary... as it is still necessary to transition into my true topic! *Insert Devious and malcontentish laughter here*
AHEM... yes, well... shall we continue? Let me just start up "Here Comes The Sun" by The Beatles...
Good, good!!
Now, proper procedure for NBC warfare scenarios (Nuclear/Biological/Chemical) in Cold War Era training regimens was to immediately, with no hesitation, tear open the carrier pouch for the gas mask, set it on our heads, shout GAS GAS GAS, thrice...damn rights, I said thrice!! And then put your helmet on, check the seals etc and prepare for contact.
Last time I was ever gassed in the Army, my trench partner, Private Homer (fitting name, by the way), panicked and dropped his rifle, helmet and gas mask in the bottom of the trench and ran away.
As soon as I was battle ready I called over to Homer and glanced where he should have been... all I saw was his ghostly silhouette shambling off down the line to the next trench. Yeesh. Panic is truly the enemy.
So anyway, on the topic of GAS GAS GAS, I have been thinking alot about petrol and how we just cant seem to disconnect from gasoline. I am starting to worry about our planet in earnest.... its in bad shape, and after this summer of spills, North America and Europe (Dont think I forgot YOU, China!)... there needs to be a cultural and physical shift...and soon!
Now, on that note, I had recently stumbled on a cool initiative happening in Quebec next year, and the reception is very positive thus far!
I am very proud that Nissan is backing this fully electric car with Hydro Quebec setting up infrastructure as a staring area for Canada! 100% Electric! No hybrids, no gas, nothing!
Of course the reality is that it takes gas to MAKE these Electric wonders, but it really got my mind wandering... about solar and electric power supplies for vehicles...so easy, so smart, so earth friendly... what the hell is wrong with us?!?!? Why can we not seem to make this very small leap??
Who am I to argue.. my little Nissan, as economical as it is, still costs me 500 bucks in gas every month... that commute is not earth friendly right now.
Soon to change, I hope.

*sighing* Finally... a solid hope for change... I think its extremely rad that Nissan is pushing this initiative for change. Read up on all of this... its pretty cool stuff.. not completely ironed out, detail wise, but a damn fine start!
I think the biggest problem is that the average Joe Bloggins, Mr Citizen, address 123 Alpha st, Anywhere North America, is hesitant to change, its new, its a question mark, its kind of scary in a subconscious and primeval way. We KNOW our gas guzzlers, we understand them, they work... why break something if it works?!?
Well.. I think about our mindsets for smoking. 15 years ago...everyone smoked pretty much everywhere, and it was fine. Then no smoking in bars, and they belly ached, but it was fine, then govt buildings, and restaurants, and finally pretty much damn near everwhere... and thank God for that too!
But the point is this... our Govt saw the need to reduce healthcare costs and keep our citizens alive to keep generating taxes, be more productive in society, less healthcare drain, and it was something that generally was wanted by the people... for the people.
So the campaigns and baby steps began... now, 15 or so years later... its a brave new world, and we are better for it!
I believe the same aggressive marketing, campaigning and infrastructure building needs to kick into gear. Soon.
This alone will be a huge shift, and a big Emissions relief, but there is alot more needing to be done, Im just hoping that people see the positives and the lack of impact on our lives, and allow for a few more successes...
So YAY for the Leaf!!! its the equivalent of the "bar ban" that started our non smoking revolution... heres hoping!
